Phone & Tablet Diagnostics in Hull
Some faults announce themselves — a cracked screen is a cracked screen. Others do not. A phone that will not turn on, restarts on its own, or has simply started behaving strangely could have any of a dozen underlying causes, and guessing at them is an expensive way to find out.
That is what diagnostics is for. We look at the device properly, work out what is actually happening, and tell you what would be involved in fixing it — so that any decision you make is an informed one.
Symptoms
When a diagnostic is the right starting point
If you recognise any of these, it is worth having the device looked at. Bring it into the shop and we can tell you what is actually going on.
- The device will not turn on at all and shows no sign of life
- It gets stuck on the manufacturer logo, or restarts in a loop
- It turns on but the screen stays black
- It restarts on its own, at random or during particular tasks
- It freezes, runs extremely slowly, or crashes repeatedly
- It gets unusually hot without being under load
- It stopped working after a drop, a knock or liquid exposure
- Several things stopped working at once
- It behaves differently depending on whether it is plugged in
- Something is wrong and you genuinely cannot tell what
What it may indicate
Possible causes
The same symptom can have several different explanations, and telling them apart is the point of an inspection. These are the possibilities we look at — not a diagnosis of your device.
A device that shows no sign of life
This can be a completely flat or failed battery, a charging fault preventing it from taking any charge at all, a power fault on the board, or a display that is not showing an image on a phone that is actually running. Those are very different repairs, which is why we check rather than assume.
Boot loops and freezing at the logo
A device that starts and restarts repeatedly may have a software or operating system problem, failing storage, or a hardware fault it is detecting at startup. Software causes are often recoverable without any parts — see software repair.
Random restarts and crashes
Restarting under load frequently points to a battery that can no longer deliver peak current, but it can also come from a failing component or overheating. See battery replacement — though we would want to confirm it first.
Overheating
A phone that runs hot while idle may have a component drawing current it should not, a battery in poor condition, or an app misbehaving. Persistent unexplained heat is worth investigating rather than living with.
Several things failing at once
When multiple functions go at the same time, the common cause is usually a shared connector, a shared flex cable, or liquid ingress. That pattern is genuinely informative and often points straight at the cause.
How it works
What happens when you bring it in
-
We ask what happened
When it started, whether it was dropped, whether it has been near liquid, and what has changed. This context frequently saves a great deal of time and it is the cheapest diagnostic tool there is.
-
We test systematically
Power delivery, charging behaviour, display output, and how the device responds to known inputs. We work through the possibilities in order rather than starting with the most expensive one.
-
We open it up if we need to
Where the external tests do not give a clear answer, we look inside — at connectors, at signs of impact, and at the water damage indicators.
-
You get a plain explanation and a price
We tell you what we found, what it would take to fix, and what it would cost. If a repair is not worth doing on a device of that age or value, we will tell you that too.
Worth knowing
If it turns out not to be worth repairing
Not every fault is economical to fix, and a phone that needs several hundred pounds of board-level work is often not a sensible repair. We would rather tell you that at the diagnostic stage than after you have committed.
If that is where we land, we will explain why, and where data recovery is a realistic option we will tell you what is involved in that instead.
What will it cost?
Repair costs depend on the device, the model and what the inspection actually finds, so we quote per device rather than publishing a figure that would be wrong for most people. Send us the make, model and fault and we will give you a straight answer.
Questions
Diagnostics FAQs
My phone will not turn on at all. Is it dead?
Not necessarily, and it is worth checking before writing it off. A phone showing no sign of life can be a failed battery, a charging fault, a display that is not lighting up on a device that is actually running, or a board fault. Only the last of those is likely to be terminal.
What does a diagnostic actually involve?
We test how the device responds to power and charge, whether the display is producing an image, and how it behaves under known conditions — and we open it up where the outside tests do not give a clear answer. Then we tell you what we found and what fixing it would cost.
My phone keeps restarting itself. What causes that?
Commonly a battery no longer able to deliver current under load, but it can also be a software fault, failing storage, or a hardware problem the device detects at startup. The pattern — whether it happens under load, when cold, or at random — helps narrow it down.
Do I have to go ahead with the repair after a diagnostic?
No. The point of a diagnostic is to give you the information to decide. If you would rather not proceed, or want to think about it, that is entirely fine.
Can you tell me what is wrong over the phone?
We can usually give you a sense of the likely possibilities, and for straightforward faults like a cracked screen we can often quote directly. For anything vaguer we would be guessing, and we would rather look at the device than tell you something that turns out to be wrong.
