Phone & Tablet Screen Repair in Hull
A damaged screen is the most common reason people bring a device into the shop, and it covers far more than cracked glass. A screen assembly is really three things bonded together — the outer glass, the display panel underneath it, and the digitiser layer that senses your touch. Damage to any one of those produces very different symptoms, which is why two phones dropped in the same way can behave completely differently afterwards.
Bring your phone or tablet to our shop on Carr Lane and we can look at it properly, work out which layer has actually been damaged, and explain what the repair involves before anything is started.
Symptoms
Screen problems we see most often
If you recognise any of these, it is worth having the device looked at. Bring it into the shop and we can tell you what is actually going on.
- Cracked or shattered glass, from a hairline split to a fully spidered screen
- A completely black display, even though the phone still rings, vibrates or makes sounds
- Coloured or white lines running down or across the display
- Flickering, dimming, or patches of the screen that have gone dark
- Ghost touch — the phone registering taps and swipes on its own
- Areas of the touchscreen that no longer respond, often along one edge
- Ink-like black blotches that spread across the display
- The screen lifting or separating away from the frame
- A display that works intermittently, or only after being pressed
- Damage that appeared after a drop, even where the glass looks intact
What it may indicate
Possible causes
The same symptom can have several different explanations, and telling them apart is the point of an inspection. These are the possibilities we look at — not a diagnosis of your device.
Cracked glass with a working display
If the picture is still sharp and touch works normally, the damage may be limited to the outer glass. It is worth dealing with sooner rather than later — cracks let in dust and moisture, a spidered screen can catch your fingers, and the next knock is far more likely to take the display out completely.
A black screen on a phone that is clearly still on
A device that rings, vibrates, or connects to a computer while showing nothing can point to a failed display panel, or to a display connector that has been knocked loose or damaged. It may also indicate a fault elsewhere on the board, so we check rather than assume.
Lines, blotches or dead patches
These are typically signs the display panel itself has been damaged, even when the outer glass has survived. Black ink-like marks that spread usually mean the panel is leaking internally, and they tend to grow over time rather than settle.
Ghost touch and unresponsive areas
Erratic or phantom touch input can be caused by a damaged digitiser, but it can also come from a poor-quality screen fitted previously, a charging or power problem feeding electrical noise into the panel, or in some cases a software fault. This is one where a proper inspection genuinely matters.
A screen lifting out of the frame
A display being pushed outwards from the chassis can indicate a swollen battery underneath it. That is worth acting on quickly — see our battery replacement page — because a swelling cell should not be left in a device.
How it works
What happens when you bring it in
-
We look at the device with you
We check what still works — backlight, touch response, the display image, the frame, and the water damage indicators — so the quote reflects what is actually wrong rather than a guess made from the outside.
-
You get a price before we start
We explain what the repair involves, what part is going in, and what it will cost. Nothing goes ahead until you have agreed to it.
-
The screen assembly is replaced
The old assembly comes out, the frame is cleaned up, seals and adhesive are renewed where the device uses them, and the new screen is fitted and bonded. Small parts such as earpiece meshes and sensor brackets are transferred across where the model requires it.
-
We test it before you take it away
Touch across the whole panel, brightness and auto-brightness, the front camera and proximity sensor, the earpiece, and Face ID or the fingerprint reader where applicable — all checked before the device goes back to you.
Worth knowing
A note on screen quality
Replacement screens are not all the same, and the difference is very visible day to day. Original panels, good aftermarket OLED, and cheaper LCD copies vary in brightness, colour accuracy, touch feel, and how well they survive a second knock.
We will tell you what we are fitting to your device and what the alternatives are, so you can weigh cost against quality yourself rather than finding out afterwards.
What will it cost?
Repair costs depend on the device, the model and what the inspection actually finds, so we quote per device rather than publishing a figure that would be wrong for most people. Send us the make, model and fault and we will give you a straight answer.
Questions
Screen Repair FAQs
My screen is cracked but everything still works. Do I need it repaired?
It still works, so it is your call — but cracked glass tends not to stay stable. The crack gives dust and moisture a route inside, sharp edges can catch your fingers, and the next small knock is far more likely to take the display out completely. Most people find it cheaper to deal with while the display underneath is still good.
Will I lose my photos and data?
A screen replacement does not normally involve wiping the device, and your data should be untouched. That said, we always suggest backing up before any repair — if a device has taken a hard knock there may be more going on than the screen, and a current backup costs you nothing.
Will Face ID or my fingerprint reader still work afterwards?
On most devices, yes. The components involved are transferred across or are unaffected by a screen swap. Some models pair certain parts to the board and on those there can be limitations — we will tell you before starting if your specific device is one of them, rather than after.
How long does a screen repair take?
Many phone screen repairs are straightforward and can be done the same day, depending on the model and whether the part is in stock. Tablets generally take longer because of how they are bonded together. Call or message us with your model and we can tell you where you stand.
Do you repair tablet and iPad screens too?
Yes — see our tablet repairs page. Tablet screens are more involved than phones because of the size of the glass and the adhesive used, so they usually need to be left with us rather than done while you wait.
My phone was dropped and the screen looks fine, but it is behaving oddly. Is that still a screen issue?
It might be, and it might not. A drop can loosen a display connector, damage the panel internally without cracking the glass, or affect something else entirely. Bring it in and we can check it rather than replacing a screen that may not be the problem.
