Phone & Tablet Camera Repair in Hull
Camera faults are one of the more misdiagnosed problems we see, because the visible symptom is often nothing to do with the camera module itself. A blurry photo can be a cracked lens cover, a failed autofocus, a stabilisation motor that has been knocked out of alignment, or simply a smeared lens.
The good news is that phone cameras are usually modular, so a genuinely failed camera can normally be replaced without touching the rest of the device.
Symptoms
Camera problems we see
If you recognise any of these, it is worth having the device looked at. Bring it into the shop and we can tell you what is actually going on.
- Photos that come out blurry or soft no matter what you do
- A camera that will not focus, or hunts back and forth without settling
- A visible shake or rattle from the camera, sometimes audible when you move the phone
- A black screen when the camera app opens
- The camera app crashing, freezing or refusing to open
- Cracked or scratched glass over the rear camera lenses
- Spots, haze or flare appearing in every photo
- One camera working while another (ultrawide, telephoto or front) does not
- Photos with a purple, green or washed-out cast
- A front camera that fails while the rear cameras are fine
What it may indicate
Possible causes
The same symptom can have several different explanations, and telling them apart is the point of an inspection. These are the possibilities we look at — not a diagnosis of your device.
Cracked or scratched lens glass
The protective glass over the rear cameras is a separate part from the camera module. When it cracks, the camera underneath is often perfectly fine — light is simply being scattered on its way in. This is frequently a much smaller repair than people expect.
A shaking or rattling camera
A camera that visibly shakes or makes a rattling noise usually points to a damaged optical image stabilisation assembly. The tiny magnets and springs that hold the lens steady can be knocked loose by a drop, and the result is blurred photos and video.
A failed camera module
Modules do fail outright, particularly after impact or liquid ingress. A black camera screen or a module that simply does not appear in the camera app can indicate a failed camera or a connector that has come loose internally.
A software fault rather than hardware
A camera app that crashes, or a black preview that clears after a restart, may be a software problem rather than a broken camera. That is worth establishing first — see software repair — before any part is replaced.
Dirt, condensation or a case
It is worth mentioning the obvious ones, because we do see them. A smeared lens, condensation trapped behind the glass after liquid exposure, or a poorly fitting case intruding into the frame can all degrade photos without anything being broken.
How it works
What happens when you bring it in
-
We work out which part is actually at fault
We test each camera on the device separately, check the lens glass under magnification, and look for the tell-tale signs of stabilisation damage. Often that narrows a "broken camera" down to a much cheaper repair.
-
We rule out software
If the symptom points to the app rather than the hardware, we establish that before recommending a part — replacing a working camera fixes nothing.
-
You get a price before we start
Whether it is lens glass, a camera module or something else, you know what it costs before any work begins.
-
The repair is carried out and tested
We check focus, stabilisation, flash, and every camera on the device, and take test shots before it goes back to you.
What will it cost?
Repair costs depend on the device, the model and what the inspection actually finds, so we quote per device rather than publishing a figure that would be wrong for most people. Send us the make, model and fault and we will give you a straight answer.
Questions
Camera Repair FAQs
My camera is shaking and my photos are blurry. What causes that?
That combination usually points to damage to the optical image stabilisation assembly — the mechanism that holds the lens steady. It is often caused by a drop. The camera module normally needs replacing, but we would confirm it is not just cracked lens glass first.
The glass over my camera is cracked. Does the whole camera need replacing?
Very often not. The protective lens glass is a separate part from the camera module underneath, and if the module is undamaged then replacing just the glass is a far smaller job. We can tell you which applies once we have looked at it.
My camera screen is just black. Is the camera dead?
Not necessarily. A black camera preview can be a failed module, a connector knocked loose, or a software fault. It is worth having it looked at rather than assumed — the fix is sometimes free.
Only my front camera has stopped working. Is that a separate repair?
Yes. The front and rear cameras are separate modules, and on most phones the front camera sits on its own assembly near the earpiece. It can be replaced independently.
There is haze or condensation inside my camera. Can that be cleaned?
Condensation behind the lens usually means moisture has found its way into the device, so it is worth treating as a liquid ingress issue rather than just a dirty lens. See our liquid damage page — the sooner it is looked at, the better the outcome tends to be.
