Symptoms

Software problems we can help with

If you recognise any of these, it is worth having the device looked at. Bring it into the shop and we can tell you what is actually going on.

  • The device is stuck on the manufacturer logo or a boot animation
  • It restarts in a loop and never reaches the home screen
  • It started misbehaving immediately after a system update
  • Apps crash constantly, or the phone freezes several times a day
  • It has become dramatically slower than it used to be
  • The device is stuck in recovery or download mode
  • Storage is full and the phone will not function properly
  • The camera, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi has stopped working with no physical cause
  • The battery drains rapidly but tests as being in good health
  • A device that has become unreliable with no obvious explanation

What it may indicate

Possible causes

The same symptom can have several different explanations, and telling them apart is the point of an inspection. These are the possibilities we look at — not a diagnosis of your device.

A failed or interrupted update

An update that was interrupted — by a flat battery, a lost connection, or a restart at the wrong moment — can leave the operating system in a state it cannot start from. This is one of the more recoverable software faults.

Corrupted system files

Boot loops and repeated crashes can indicate corruption in the operating system itself. Often this can be repaired without losing data, though not always — we will tell you which before starting.

Failing storage presenting as a software fault

Storage that is beginning to fail looks very much like software corruption from the outside, and it is important to tell them apart. One is a fix; the other is a hardware issue with different implications for your data.

A misbehaving app or a full device

A single badly behaved app, or storage that is completely full, can make a phone feel broken. These are among the easier problems to resolve, and we will not pretend otherwise.

A hardware fault with software symptoms

A worn battery causes restarts, and a loose connector can make a camera or a sensor disappear. Where the symptom is software-shaped but the cause is physical, a diagnostic is the right starting point — see diagnostics.

What will it cost?

Repair costs depend on the device, the model and what the inspection actually finds, so we quote per device rather than publishing a figure that would be wrong for most people. Send us the make, model and fault and we will give you a straight answer.

Questions

Software Repair FAQs

My phone is stuck on the logo and will not start. Is it fixable?

Often, yes. A device stuck at the logo commonly has a software problem rather than a hardware failure, and those are frequently recoverable. It can also indicate failing storage or a hardware fault, so we would establish which before promising anything.

Will I lose my data?

It depends on the fault. Some software repairs leave your data untouched; others require the device to be reset. We will tell you which applies to your situation before we start, so the decision is yours.

My phone got much slower after an update. Can that be fixed?

Frequently. It can be a leftover from an interrupted update, an app behaving badly on the new version, storage pressure, or a battery that can no longer keep up with what the phone is asking of it. Worth looking at rather than living with.

Can you unlock a phone or bypass an account lock?

No. We do not remove account locks or activation locks — those exist to protect people from theft, and working around them is not something a legitimate repair shop should do. If it is your own device and you have proof of ownership, the manufacturer is the right route.

How do I know it is software and not a hardware fault?

Often you cannot tell from the outside, which is exactly why we test before recommending anything. That is what our diagnostics service is for.
