Back Glass & Housing Repair in Hull
Glass backs look superb and they are the first thing to go when a phone lands face-up. Because the rear glass is bonded to the frame rather than clipped on, replacing it is a more involved job than most people expect — but it is very much a repair rather than a write-off.
It is also worth doing properly. Broken rear glass leaves sharp edges, compromises whatever water resistance the device had, and on phones with wireless charging the damage can sit directly over the charging coil.
Symptoms
Rear damage we can look at
If you recognise any of these, it is worth having the device looked at. Bring it into the shop and we can tell you what is actually going on.
- Cracked or shattered glass on the back of the phone
- Glass fragments lifting, flaking or coming away in your hand
- Sharp edges that catch on pockets, cases or fingers
- Cracking around the camera lens surround
- A rear panel that has separated or lifted from the frame
- Dents or bends in the frame after a drop
- Wireless charging that has become unreliable since the damage
- A phone you want to sell or trade in that is cosmetically damaged
What it may indicate
Possible causes
The same symptom can have several different explanations, and telling them apart is the point of an inspection. These are the possibilities we look at — not a diagnosis of your device.
Impact damage from a drop
By far the most common cause. Rear glass is toughened but it is still glass, and a corner impact concentrates the force in one place. The damage often looks worse than it is structurally.
Pressure or flex damage
Sitting on a phone or carrying it in a tight pocket can crack the rear panel without any drop at all, particularly on larger handsets.
A swollen battery pushing the panel outwards
If the back has lifted or bowed rather than cracked from an impact, that can indicate the battery underneath has swollen. It is worth checking — see battery replacement — before the panel is simply refitted.
Damage over the wireless charging coil
The wireless charging coil sits directly behind the rear glass on most modern phones. Damage in that area, or a repair done without refitting the coil correctly, can affect wireless charging.
How it works
What happens when you bring it in
-
We assess the damage and the frame
Rear glass repairs depend heavily on the state of the frame underneath. We check whether the chassis is bent, whether the camera surround is affected, and whether anything internal has been disturbed.
-
We tell you what is realistic for your model
On some devices the rear glass is replaced on its own; on others the practical repair is a full rear housing. Which applies depends on the model, and we will explain the options and the cost before starting.
-
The old glass is removed and the frame cleaned
Bonded glass has to be removed and the adhesive residue cleaned back properly, otherwise the new panel will not sit flush. Components such as the wireless charging coil and flash diffuser are transferred where the model requires it.
-
The new panel is fitted and tested
The replacement is bonded in place, and we check wireless charging, the rear cameras and the flash before handing the device back.
Worth knowing
Water resistance after a rear glass repair
Manufacturers achieve water resistance with adhesive seals and gaskets that are designed to be fitted once, in a factory. Once a device has been opened, water resistance cannot honestly be guaranteed by anyone, whoever does the work.
We renew the seals a model uses as part of the repair, which restores a good deal of the original protection against splashes and rain. We will not tell you the phone is waterproof again, because nobody can reasonably promise that.
What will it cost?
Repair costs depend on the device, the model and what the inspection actually finds, so we quote per device rather than publishing a figure that would be wrong for most people. Send us the make, model and fault and we will give you a straight answer.
Questions
Back Glass Repair FAQs
Is it worth repairing the back glass, or should I just use a case?
If the damage is minor and stable, a case is a legitimate short-term answer. Where the glass is flaking, sharp, or cracked around the cameras it is worth repairing — loose fragments get worse, and open damage lets moisture and dust in.
Will wireless charging still work after the repair?
It should. The wireless charging coil sits behind the rear glass and is transferred across or replaced as part of the job. We test wireless charging before the phone goes back to you.
Why does back glass repair sometimes cost more than a screen?
Because of how it is built. The rear panel is bonded to the frame rather than clipped in, so removing it takes considerably more time than a screen, and on some models the only reliable repair is a complete rear housing. It varies a lot by device, which is why we quote per model.
My phone is still waterproof, right?
Once a device has been opened, water resistance cannot be guaranteed by anyone. We renew the seals your model uses, which restores a good deal of protection against splashes and rain, but we would not describe any repaired phone as waterproof.
Can you repair a bent frame as well?
It depends how far it has gone. Minor frame damage can often be worked with; a significantly bent chassis usually needs a housing replacement, and on some devices that is not economical. Bring it in and we will give you an honest assessment.
